Outdoor air quality monitoring

AirGradient Open Air

The Open Air is the outdoor monitor in the AirGradient range. It gives your site a local outdoor baseline, which is what makes indoor readings meaningful — without it, you can't tell whether a spike came from inside the building or from the air outside it.

What is the AirGradient Open Air?

It's an outdoor air quality monitor (model O-1PST) built for continuous, localized measurement. It runs around the clock in a fixed outdoor position and sends its readings to the AirGradient Dashboard, so you can see how outdoor conditions at your site change through the day and across seasons.

It's also open-source, and works with Home Assistant and Homey if you want to fold the data into a wider building system.

What does it measure?

As presented on our product page, the Open Air measures:

  • PM2.5 — fine particles from traffic, combustion, dust and wildfire smoke
  • CO₂ — carbon dioxide
  • TVOCs — total volatile organic compounds
  • NOx — nitrogen oxides, largely a traffic and combustion marker
  • Temperature and humidity — context that affects how the other readings behave

Sensor configurations can vary by model revision. If you need to confirm exactly which sensors are fitted to the unit you've been quoted or shipped, ask us and we'll check the specification for your order.

Where should the Open Air be mounted?

Placement decides how useful your data is. As a general guide:

  • Pick a spot with free-moving air on all sides — not a tight alcove or enclosed corner
  • Keep it clear of direct exhaust sources such as HVAC discharge, generators, kitchen vents and idling vehicle bays, unless that source is specifically what you want to measure
  • Avoid direct sun on the enclosure where you can, since it can skew temperature readings
  • Make sure it's within reach of power and a stable WiFi signal
  • Choose somewhere you can safely reach again later for occasional checks

We provide setup, installation and training with every AirGradient deployment, so you don't have to make these calls alone — we'll walk the site with you.

How do I connect it to WiFi?

The monitor creates its own temporary WiFi hotspot during setup, and you use a phone, tablet or laptop to hand it your network details:

  • Power the device on and wait for the LED to start flashing — allow up to 30 seconds
  • On your phone, join the hotspot named airgradient-xxxxx, using the password cleanair
  • A setup screen should open by itself. If it doesn't, type 192.168.4.1 into your browser's address bar (not a search box) while still connected to the hotspot
  • Choose your network and enter your WiFi password — not cleanair, which only gets you onto the device's own hotspot

There's roughly a three-minute window before setup times out. If it does, just restart the monitor and start again. Pre-assembled units also carry a printed QR code that takes you straight to the hotspot and skips the manual search.

How do we view the data once it's running?

Through the AirGradient Dashboard, in any browser. You'll see live values, historical trends and comparisons across every monitor on your account — useful when you want to put an outdoor reading next to an indoor one from the same moment.

Do we need to calibrate it ourselves?

No. Fully assembled AirGradient monitors are individually calibrated at the factory against a reference-grade instrument, and those calibration values are tied to the sensor serial number. They're applied automatically the moment you register the device on the dashboard, where they appear as Factory Calibration.

Which is one reason registering the monitor properly matters — an unregistered device never receives its own correction values.

How much maintenance does it need?

Very little. The Open Air is built to sit outdoors and largely look after itself. A reasonable routine is:

  • Glance at the dashboard periodically to confirm the device is still reporting
  • Clear away leaves, nests, cobwebs or debris around the vents when you see them
  • Check the mount and cable are still secure after storms or high winds

Cleaning the particulate sensor isn't recommended as routine upkeep — only if the monitor starts behaving abnormally. Opening a working device does more harm than good.

The readings look wrong. What should I check?

"Wrong" is often "unexpected but real" — outdoor air genuinely swings a long way in a short time. Before assuming a fault, work through this:

  • Look at the trend over several days rather than one moment. A single spike is usually a real event nearby
  • Check whether something changed close to the monitor — construction, mowing, traffic, a nearby fire, seasonal smoke
  • Confirm the device is registered on the dashboard so factory calibration is being applied
  • Compare it against another monitor on your account, if you have one

Genuine sensor faults tend to look different: no readings at all, values pinned flat, or erratic jumps unconnected to anything happening outside. If you're seeing that pattern, get in touch rather than opening the unit.

Why doesn't our reading match the nearest government air quality station?

Because they're measuring different air. Regulatory stations are often several miles away and are sited to represent a broad region, while your Open Air is measuring the air at your fence line — next to your parking lot, your street, your neighbors.

Local differences are expected and are frequently the whole point of installing a monitor on site. What matters most for decisions is the pattern your own device reports over time, not perfect agreement with a distant station.

The monitor shows as offline. What now?

Almost always a network issue rather than a broken device. Check in this order:

  • Power — confirm the adapter is seated and the outlet is live
  • WiFi coverage at the mounting position, which may be weaker than where you first set it up
  • Whether the network password, name or guest-network policy changed recently
  • Whether a firewall or content filter is blocking the device's outbound connection

Newly registered monitors also show offline for the first minute or two, which is normal. If it's still offline after a power cycle, reconnect it to WiFi using the hotspot steps above.

What should I have ready before contacting support?

Having these to hand usually turns two or three emails into one:

  • The device serial number (printed on pre-assembled units, and shown on screen at startup)
  • Where the monitor is installed, and how long it's been there
  • What you're seeing versus what you expected
  • When the behavior started, and anything that changed around then — network updates, a move, a power outage
  • A screenshot of the dashboard view showing the issue

Indoor air quality monitoring

AirGradient ONE

The ONE is the indoor monitor — the device that goes in classrooms, offices and childcare rooms. It combines dashboard reporting with an at-a-glance LED bar, so staff in the room get feedback without logging into anything.

What is the AirGradient ONE?

An indoor air quality monitor that tells you whether the air in a room is healthy. It tracks PM2.5, CO₂, TVOCs, NOx, temperature and humidity, and has a built-in color LED bar plus a compact display for quick visual feedback in the room itself.

It reports to the same AirGradient Dashboard as the Open Air, so indoor and outdoor readings sit side by side.

What do the different measurements actually tell us?

  • PM2.5 — fine particles small enough to reach deep into the lungs. Indoors these come from cooking, cleaning, activity and outdoor air drifting in
  • CO₂ — rises as people breathe in an enclosed space, so it works as a practical stand-in for how well a room is ventilated
  • TVOCs — gases given off by cleaning products, markers, adhesives, new furnishings and similar sources
  • NOx — nitrogen oxides, generally linked to combustion and traffic
  • Temperature and humidity — comfort factors that also shape how other pollutants behave in a room

What does the LED bar mean?

It gives an at-a-glance color reading, so a teacher or facilities lead can tell at a glance whether a room needs attention — typically by opening a window, adjusting ventilation or pausing an activity — without opening the dashboard.

Because the parameter and thresholds behind the LED bar are configurable, we'll set it up with you during onboarding so it reflects the levels that matter for your rooms, and make sure staff know what each color should prompt them to do.

Where should we place it in a classroom or office?

Aim for air that represents what people are actually breathing:

  • Roughly breathing height — sitting or standing level, not floor level or ceiling height
  • Away from open windows, doorways and supply vents, which flush the sensor with air that isn't representative of the room
  • Out of direct sunlight and away from radiators, which distort temperature
  • Not directly beside a single person's desk, where their own breathing dominates the CO₂ reading
  • Somewhere with free air circulation and access to power

The ONE ships with several mounting and cable-management options, so it can sit on a surface or mount to a wall.

How do we set it up and get it onto the dashboard?

Two stages: connect it to WiFi, then register it to your account.

  • WiFi — join the device's hotspot airgradient-xxxxx with the password cleanair, then enter your own network details in the setup screen that appears (or browse to 192.168.4.1 if it doesn't). Green LEDs confirm success
  • Dashboard — add the monitor by scanning its QR code or entering the serial number manually, then give it a location name

The serial number is the xxxxx portion of the hotspot name, in lower case, without the airgradient- prefix. Expect the monitor to show as offline for a minute or two immediately after you add it. We provide setup and training as part of every deployment.

Can it run without WiFi?

Yes — the ONE has an offline mode, and sensor readings continue to appear on the device's own display and LED bar. What you lose is the dashboard: no history, no trend charts, no shareable reports, no alerts.

For a single room where someone is watching the display, that can be enough. For anything you plan to report on to leadership or families, you'll want it connected.

What's a good CO₂ level for an occupied room?

Think of CO₂ as a ventilation gauge rather than a pollutant with a pass/fail line. Outdoor air typically sits near 400 ppm. Indoors, the reading climbs as people occupy a room and falls when fresh air is brought in — so a room that steadily rises through a lesson and doesn't recover is telling you something about its air exchange.

Appropriate targets vary with the building, its use and the guidance your organization follows, so we'd rather set them with you than publish a single number here. Talk to us and we'll help you choose thresholds that fit your rooms and your reporting obligations.

Our CO₂ readings look off after moving the monitor. Is it broken?

Probably not. CO₂ sensors of this type can drift after transport or a knock, and they correct themselves automatically: the sensor treats the lowest value it sees over a week as its fresh-air baseline. Left running, the monitor should be reading correctly within about seven days without you doing anything.

If you'd rather not wait, you can prompt a manual calibration by giving the device genuine fresh air — outside, or with all windows open — for at least 20 minutes, then triggering calibration from the dashboard's location settings. About 10 minutes later it should read near 400 ppm. Admin access is required, so contact us if you don't have it.

What maintenance does it need?

Day to day, almost none. Keep the vents clear of dust and don't obstruct airflow around the enclosure. Wipe the outside with a dry or lightly damp cloth — never spray cleaner onto or into the device.

Sensors do lose accuracy over a long service life, and individual components can be replaced rather than discarding the whole monitor. Contact us when you'd like us to review the age and condition of your fleet — we'll advise on what, if anything, is due.

How do I restart or factory reset the monitor?

For most problems, a simple power cycle is the right first move: unplug it, wait about ten seconds, plug it back in.

A factory reset is performed by pressing and holding the BOOT button on the back of the device. It clears the saved WiFi configuration, so you'll need to run through setup again afterwards. Only reach for it once a restart and a WiFi reconnection have failed — or when our support team asks you to.

The monitor shows offline on our dashboard. What should we check?

  • Is it powered, and is the outlet switched on?
  • Has anything changed on the network — new password, new access point, a guest network that expires sessions?
  • Is WiFi coverage adequate at that spot? Signal in a far classroom is often weaker than in the office where it was configured
  • Could a school firewall or content filter be blocking its outbound connection? This one catches a lot of education deployments

If none of that resolves it, redo the WiFi setup. Still stuck? Contact us with the serial number and roughly when it dropped off.

Portable air quality monitoring

AirGradient GO

The GO is the portable monitor — battery powered, weatherproof, with its own display, GPS and on-device storage. It answers a different question from the fixed monitors: not "what is this room like," but "what am I actually breathing as I move through the day."

How is the GO different from the ONE and the Open Air?

The ONE and the Open Air are fixed monitors: they stay in one place, run on mains power and report continuously from that spot. The GO travels with you.

  • Battery powered, so it isn't tied to an outlet
  • Weatherproof and built for daily carry — commutes, school runs, site walks
  • Built-in e-ink display, so readings are visible without a phone
  • GPS and on-device storage, so a journey can be replayed against a map afterwards

It complements the fixed monitors rather than replacing them.

What does the GO measure?

PM2.5, CO₂, TVOC, NOx, temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure.

That mix works both outdoors, where PM2.5 exposure along a route is usually the headline, and indoors, where CO₂ trends tell you about ventilation in the rooms you pass through.

Do I need my phone with me to use it?

No. The GO is designed to work completely independently. Readings appear on its own display, sessions are recorded to on-device storage, and GPS is built in — so you can head out, record a route, and sync the data later when it suits you.

How do I charge it?

Through the USB-C port, using a standard 5V/2A USB power supply. Most phone chargers meet that. A power supply isn't included in the box.

How long does the battery last?

It depends heavily on how you configure it, so a single figure would be misleading. Runtime is shortened by:

  • Shorter measurement intervals
  • GPS being switched on
  • Active route tracking
  • Brighter LED settings

A commute recorded with GPS and frequent sampling draws far more than a device logging quietly at long intervals. AirGradient publishes a battery life simulator that lets you model different usage patterns, and we can help you pick settings that match how you plan to use it.

Can I use it in one place instead of carrying it?

Yes. The GO supports stationary logging when you want to track a single location over a longer period, and its built-in WiFi can be used for that. It can sit on a table, mount to a wall, or clip to a bag.

That said, if a room needs permanent monitoring with dashboard reporting and alerts, the AirGradient ONE is the better tool for the job.

How should I read the data from a walk or commute?

Look for patterns, not single numbers. A recorded session lets you replay where exposure changed across a journey and tie specific spikes to real things — a busy intersection, a tunnel, a poorly ventilated waiting room.

Two habits make the data far more useful:

  • Repeat the same route a few times. One trip is an anecdote; several make a pattern
  • Compare alternatives — a different street, a different departure time — rather than judging a single walk against an absolute threshold

Is it OK to use in the rain?

The GO is weatherproof and designed for repeated real-world use outdoors, including the occasional rain shower on a commute or a site walk.

Weatherproof isn't waterproof, though. Don't submerge it, don't leave it sitting in standing water, and let it dry before charging if the USB-C port has got wet.

It won't turn on, or GPS isn't locking. What should I try?

  • Won't turn on — charge it on a known-good 5V/2A supply and cable for a while before assuming a fault. A fully depleted battery can take some time before the device responds
  • No GPS fix — GPS needs a clear view of the sky and a little time to acquire satellites. Indoors, in a vehicle, or between tall buildings, expect delays or no fix at all. Step outside and give it a few minutes
  • Readings look odd right after switching on — give the sensors time to settle rather than judging the first moments of a session

There's a reset button on the bottom of the device. Use it only if our support team asks you to.

How do we buy or deploy the GO across a team?

The GO is the newest product in the AirGradient range, and availability, lead times and volume options change. Rather than list details here that may be out of date by the time you read them, talk to us — we're an authorized AirGradient reseller in the United States and can confirm current availability and what a multi-device rollout would involve.

Surface sanitizing

INVZBL® UVC Sanitizing Cabinets

The B3 and Z13 cabinets use UVC light to treat shared items — tablets, laptops, headsets and other high-touch equipment — without liquids or chemical residue. These questions cover choosing between the two, operating them safely, and getting consistent results.

What are the INVZBL® UVC sanitizing cabinets?

Enclosed cabinets that treat the surfaces of items placed inside them using UVC light. They're a dry process — no sprays, no wipes, no drying time, and nothing left behind on screens or ports.

We offer two models: the B3, a countertop unit sized for classrooms and small offices, and the Z13, a larger mobile unit for higher throughput. Both are engineered in the USA.

How does UVC sanitizing work?

UVC light at 254 nm penetrates the thin outer wall of microscopic organisms and reaches their DNA and RNA, which prevents them from replicating.

The cabinets are lined with reflective internal surfaces so the light reaches items from multiple angles — including ports and crevices that a wipe tends to miss. Because it works by light reaching a surface, line of sight is the thing that determines results, which is why loading matters.

Should we choose the B3 or the Z13?

It comes down to volume and whether the cabinet needs to move.

  • B3 — compact and countertop-sized, holding 12 tablets or 6 laptops, with a 3-minute cycle. Suits a single classroom, front office or small practice rotating items through the day. UL Listed and certified
  • Z13 — a mobile, high-capacity unit on heavy-duty casters, built to handle entire laptop carts or large quantities of shared equipment at once, and to move room to room. Well suited to headsets, VR goggles and laptops

What can we put in the cabinet?

They're designed for everyday shared items and hard-surfaced technology — tablets, laptops, headsets, VR goggles, and similar high-touch classroom and office equipment.

A few sensible limits:

  • Check the item manufacturer's guidance first if you're unsure about a device
  • Wipe visibly soiled items before a cycle — UVC treats surfaces, it doesn't remove dirt, and dirt shields what's underneath it
  • Prolonged UV exposure can degrade some plastics, adhesives and printed labels over time
  • Porous and fabric items are far less predictable than hard surfaces

If you have a specific item you're unsure about, ask us before making it part of a routine.

How long is a cycle?

The B3 runs a 3-minute cycle, which is short enough to rotate items between classes rather than at the end of the day.

For cycle times and throughput on the Z13 in your particular workflow, contact us and we'll confirm against the current specification for the configuration you're considering.

Is it safe to use around students and staff?

The cabinets are designed as enclosed systems, so the UVC light stays inside during a cycle. The B3 is UL Listed and certified.

UVC is genuinely harmful to eyes and skin on direct exposure, so the enclosure isn't a formality. Treat these as the non-negotiables:

  • Keep the door fully closed for the entire cycle
  • Never defeat, tape over or bypass the door interlock or any safety switch
  • Don't look directly at the lamps, including during servicing
  • Disconnect power before any maintenance or lamp replacement
  • Site the cabinet where operation is supervised by trained staff, not left to students

We provide operational training as part of every deployment, and we'd rather your team had it.

How should items be loaded for consistent results?

The single biggest factor in getting a good result is making sure light can reach every surface you care about:

  • Load a single layer where you can — don't stack items on top of each other
  • Space items so they aren't touching or overlapping
  • Open cases, folios and lids rather than treating a closed device
  • Remember that any surface in shadow — a device's underside, a contact point against a shelf — isn't being treated
  • Don't exceed the stated capacity; overfilling creates shadows

If throughput is a constant squeeze, that usually points to the Z13 rather than to overloading a B3.

Does this replace our normal cleaning routine?

No, and it isn't intended to. The cabinets are a surface sanitizing step that works alongside your existing cleaning — not a substitute for it.

Two limits worth being clear about: UVC doesn't remove visible soil, spills or sticky residue, so grubby items still need wiping first. And it provides no lasting protection — an item is treated at the moment of the cycle, and becomes re-contaminated as soon as it's handled again.

What maintenance does a cabinet need, and when do lamps need replacing?

Routine upkeep is light:

  • Keep the interior clean and free of dust and debris — deposits on reflective surfaces reduce how well light spreads through the cabinet
  • Wipe the exterior as part of normal cleaning
  • Check the door seals and closure as part of a periodic walkthrough

B3 bulb life is rated at 8,000+ hours. Worth knowing: UVC lamps lose output gradually before they ever fail visibly, so "the light still comes on" is not evidence that a lamp is still performing. Track hours and replace on schedule. Contact us for replacement lamps and to confirm the interval for your model and usage.

The cabinet won't start, or the cycle stops early. What should we check?

  • Is the door fully closed and latched? Safety interlocks are designed to stop a cycle the moment the door opens, and a slightly proud item or trailing cable is a very common cause
  • Is the unit properly plugged in, and the outlet live?
  • Is anything obstructing the door seal or the shelf?
  • Did someone open the door mid-cycle? That's the interlock doing its job

If the cabinet still won't complete a cycle, stop using it and contact us. Don't attempt internal repairs or open the unit to inspect the lamps.

Air purification

INVZBL® Air Purification

Two systems for treating room air while people are in it: the ceiling-mounted N-AIR and the portable Air Base One. Both combine UV-C with multi-stage filtration and run quietly in the background of occupied classrooms and offices.

What is INVZBL® Air Purification?

A pair of air treatment systems that draw room air through filtration and UV-C treatment before returning it to the space:

  • N-AIR — a ceiling-mounted panel that fits standard 2x2 drop ceiling grids and treats the upper two-thirds of the room's air, an approach recommended by the CDC. Installed and out of the way
  • Air Base One — a portable unit on casters with 5-stage filtration, no installation required

Both are chemical-free and designed for continuous background operation.

Is it safe to run these while a room is occupied?

Yes — that's what they're designed for, and it's the key difference from the sanitizing cabinets. The UV-C is enclosed within the unit rather than shining into the room. Air is drawn in, treated inside the system, and returned, so staff and students can be present throughout.

The cabinets treat items in a sealed box; these treat the air in an occupied space continuously.

Should we choose the N-AIR or the Air Base One?

  • N-AIR — best where you want a permanent, invisible solution in a room with a standard 2x2 drop ceiling. Nothing takes up floor space, nothing gets unplugged or moved, and it's out of reach of curious hands. It includes professional white-glove delivery and installation
  • Air Base One — best where you need flexibility, there's no suitable ceiling, or you want to deploy quickly. Plug-and-play, on built-in casters, easily moved between rooms as needs change

Plenty of sites use both — fixed units in permanent classrooms, portable units for gyms, libraries, temporary rooms or wherever the need moves around.

What's involved in installing the N-AIR?

It's designed to fit seamlessly into existing ceiling panels on a standard 2x2 drop ceiling grid, and professional white-glove delivery and installation is included — so this isn't a job your facilities team has to take on.

The main things worth confirming ahead of time are your ceiling grid type and power availability. We'll assess this with you before installation.

How do we set up the Air Base One?

There's no installation. Roll it into position, plug it in, and switch it on.

Placement makes a real difference to how well it works:

  • Keep intake and outlet clear — not pushed against a wall, into a corner, or behind furniture
  • Position it centrally in the space where practical, rather than tucked in a dead corner
  • Leave clearance around the unit so air can circulate freely
  • Route the power cable where it won't become a trip hazard in a busy room

How noisy are they in a classroom?

The N-AIR operates at 40–55 dB with an adjustable 4-speed fan, so you can balance airflow against noise for the room — a quieter setting during instruction, a higher one between classes or after hours.

The Air Base One is designed for whisper-quiet operation in learning environments. If noise is a particular concern in your space, tell us and we'll factor it into the recommendation.

What filtration do they use?

  • N-AIR — a MERV-8 pre-filter combined with 254 nm UV-C treatment. UL/cUL Listed
  • Air Base One — 5-stage filtration: pre-filter, HEPA, carbon, photocatalyst and UV-C. The True HEPA stage captures 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns. UL Listed

The stages do different jobs: the pre-filter catches large debris and protects what's behind it, HEPA handles fine particles, and carbon addresses odors and some gases.

How often do filters need replacing?

There's no single answer, because filter life depends on how many hours a unit runs, how dusty the environment is, occupancy, and the fan speed you use. A purifier running all day in a busy gym will load its filters far faster than one in a quiet office.

Rather than publish an interval that might not suit your site, we'd rather set a schedule with you. Contact us for the recommended replacement schedule and genuine replacement filters for your model.

Signs a filter is due: noticeably reduced airflow, the unit working harder or sounding louder at the same setting, or a visibly loaded pre-filter.

Do these systems produce ozone?

It's a fair question and an important one to get a documented answer to rather than a reassuring one. Ozone output isn't specified in our published product information, so please contact us for the current specification sheet and third-party test documentation for the exact model you're considering.

If your district or organization has procurement requirements around ozone emissions, tell us up front and we'll supply the documentation you need to satisfy them.

Does air purification replace ventilation?

No. Purification and ventilation solve different problems. Ventilation brings in fresh outdoor air and removes CO₂, which builds up whenever people occupy an enclosed room. A purifier treats the air already in the space — it doesn't reduce CO₂.

This is exactly why we pair purification with monitoring. Your AirGradient monitor will show CO₂ climbing in an under-ventilated room even with a purifier running well, and that's useful information rather than a contradiction. Treat them as two parts of the same strategy.

How do we know the system is actually working?

Air purification is invisible by nature, which is precisely why measurement matters. The most convincing evidence is your own before-and-after data:

  • Monitor a room with an AirGradient ONE before deployment to establish a baseline
  • Compare PM2.5 in the same room, at similar times and occupancy, after the system is running
  • Compare a treated room against an untreated one in the same building
  • Use the dashboard's reports to share the result with staff and families

Day to day, confirm the unit is powered and running at the intended fan speed, and check the pre-filter's condition periodically.

Airflow has dropped or the unit has become louder. What should we check?

  • Check the pre-filter first — a loaded filter is the most common cause of both symptoms
  • Confirm nothing is blocking the intake or outlet: furniture, storage, displays or artwork pushed too close
  • Check the fan speed hasn't been changed by someone in the room
  • For the Air Base One, make sure it isn't backed into a corner

If airflow is still reduced after a filter change and a clear path around the unit, contact us before disassembling anything.
